Voice Flute in D - 415 Hz, Montpellier Maple
The Voice Flute in D at 415 Hz is undoubtedly one of the 4 essential instruments for exploring the historical repertoire of the recorder, with the Baroque Alto in F, the Ganassi in G, and the 17th century Soprano "Van Eyck".
This recorder in D, whose dimensions are between the Alto and the Tenor, reveals a warm and endearing sound. In addition to the repertoire written specifically for this instrument, there is the literature of the Traverso, provided that you are able to read (with Alto fingerings) in the F clef.
This new model is part of my Historical Instrument Reconstruction program, and accompanies the Ganassi in G and the 17th century soprano.
It is interpolated from an alto recorder by Th. Stanesby, which I consider today to be the best optimized and most balanced of the historical instruments that have come down to us.
This version was designed specifically for a Maple production, and was adapted to its assets. The objective was to offer a balanced instrument, easy to play, with excellent intonation.
The natural lightness of Maple made it possible to offer an instrument with a wide bore, for a warmer and more powerful sound. Particular attention was paid to ergonomics, and its contained weight makes it rather comfortable to play. The Montpellier Maple I use, from France, is a small tree with very hard wood, whose tight grain and color are reminiscent of Boxwood.
As with the other recorders in my Historical Instrument Reconstruction program, a significant amount of prototyping and reflection was necessary to achieve a finely optimized instrument that is still very close to the originals.
From this careful development came an especially nice recorder : the easy and fast upper register comes with beautiful bass notes, and the intonation is difficult to find fault with.
